UK families traveling through busy airports and rail ports now have an easier way to clear border control. Starting in 2026, children aged 10 and older can use passport e-gates if they have a biometric passport and travel with an adult. This change applies at over 270 e-gates across 15 UK air and rail ports, helping speed up entry after long trips.

Faster Entry for Families at UK Borders

UK Border Force has updated its rules to let children aged 10 to 17 use automated passport e-gates. These gates scan biometric passports, which have a rectangular camera symbol on the cover. The symbol shows the passport holds digital data for quick checks.

This setup works at major ports like airports and rail terminals. Families who qualify pass through faster than those in manual lines. However, every rule must be met, or the gate will not open.

Age Limits and Who Must Accompany Children

Children under 10 still need a Border Force officer to check their passport by hand. Officers stamp the document manually for these young travelers.

For ages 10 to 17, the child must go with an adult. They cannot use the e-gate alone. British citizens and nationals from select countries qualify, along with members of the Registered Traveller Service.

Eligible nationalities include those from EU countries, Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, and the USA.

Key Documents to Bring Along

Families should pack proof of relationship in carry-on bags. This avoids delays if officers ask questions.

Bring items like:

  • The child’s birth certificate or adoption papers.
  • Marriage or divorce certificates if last names differ.
  • A signed letter from parents allowing travel, with contact information.

These help when the accompanying adult is not a parent. If the e-gate rejects the child, speak to an officer right away for a proper stamp.

Rules on ID Cards and Passports

Passport e-gates accept only biometric passports, not ID cards. This includes EEA and Swiss ID cards.

One short exception exists for Swiss nationals with a specific visa from Switzerland. They can use ID cards until December 31, 2025. After that, passports are required for everyone.

Travelers from Europe who rely on ID cards should switch to passports to avoid issues.

How to Check Rules Before Travel

Visit the UK government site for the latest details on e-gates. The page “Get through the UK border faster” lists age limits, nationalities, and document needs.

Use the UK Border Force app or website to confirm e-gate locations and passport rules. Check your documents early to prevent surprises at the port.

Conclusion

Children aged 10 and up with biometric passports can now speed through UK passport e-gates when with an adult. Families save time by meeting nationality rules and carrying key papers. Plan ahead, and border control becomes simpler for everyone.
