Malaysia Introduces 10-Year Passport for Adults

Starting June 4, 2026, Malaysian citizens aged between 18 and 59 can apply for a new 10-year passport. This updated passport option comes with a fee of RM350, doubling the validity period from the previous five years. This change aims to provide a longer renewal cycle for the country’s main adult working-age population.

Alongside the introduction of the longer-validity passport, Malaysia has also revised the penalties for lost passport replacements. The fees for replacing a lost passport now range from RM550 to RM1,350, depending on how many times a passport has been reported lost. This creates a tiered system where routine issuance is priced differently from replacements due to loss.

New Passport Validity and Fees

The primary change for eligible Malaysians is the extended validity period of the passport. Previously, passports were issued for five years. The new system offers a 10-year validity for citizens aged 18 to 59. This means individuals within this age group will need to renew their passports only half as often as before.

The cost for this new 10-year passport is set at RM350. This fee applies to the standard application for the extended validity document. This pricing structure is part of a broader update to the passport issuance system.

Revised Fees for Lost Passports

The Malaysian government has also implemented stricter and higher fees for replacing lost passports. The previous system had different replacement charges, but the new gazetted structure introduces a wider range. The cost to replace a lost passport now starts at RM550 for the first instance and can increase up to RM1,350 for subsequent losses.

This revised fee structure aims to discourage passport loss and emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the travel document. The significant difference between the RM350 fee for a new 10-year passport and the starting RM550 fee for a replacement highlights this policy shift. It creates a clear financial incentive for passport holders to keep their documents secure.

Eligibility for the 10-Year Passport

The new 10-year passport option is specifically available to Malaysian citizens who fall within the age bracket of 18 to 59 years old. This means that individuals outside this age range, such as minors or senior citizens, will continue to follow the existing passport validity rules. The focus of this reform is on the country’s primary adult working-age demographic.

This targeted approach ensures that the benefits of the extended validity and the new fee structure are applied to the largest group of passport holders who frequently travel or require updated documentation. The authorities have clearly defined the eligibility criteria to avoid confusion during the application process.
