Receiving confirmation that your tax return has been accepted by the IRS is a positive step, but it can be confusing when a refund date doesn’t immediately follow. An accepted return simply means the IRS has received your filing for processing. It does not guarantee that your refund has been approved or that a payment date has been set. Many taxpayers encounter this situation, wondering why their refund seems stalled after the initial acceptance.
The IRS generally processes most electronically filed returns within 21 days. However, various factors can lead to delays, turning a straightforward tax season into a period of uncertainty. Understanding the stages of refund processing and common reasons for delays can help you navigate this process more effectively without resorting to unnecessary actions like refiling.
The Three Stages of Refund Processing
The IRS tracks your refund through three main stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent. A refund date typically appears only after your return has been approved. If your return is still in the “Return Received” or “Refund Approved” stage, it’s normal for a specific payment date to be missing.
For electronically filed returns, you can usually start checking the status of your refund through the “Where’s My Refund?” tool about 24 hours after the IRS receives your filing. Why an Accepted Return Might Not Have a Refund Date

Incorrect Information in the Refund Tracker
The “Where’s My Refund?” tool requires specific information to locate your tax return. This includes your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, the tax year, and the exact federal refund amount. Errors in any of these details can prevent the tool from finding your return, making it appear as though no progress has been made.
Common mistakes include entering a state refund amount instead of the federal one, combining federal and state totals, subtracting tax preparer fees, or using a refund advance amount. Even rounding the refund amount or checking the wrong tax year can lead to a “not found” status.
Identity Verification Requirements
One of the most frequent reasons for a stalled refund is the need for identity verification. If the IRS suspects fraudulent activity or if there are discrepancies, they may require you to verify your identity. This often happens if you receive a notice like CP5071 or Letter 5447C.
After completing the identity verification process, it can take an additional 2 to 3 weeks before your refund status updates. In some cases, the entire processing time after verification can extend up to 9 weeks. Filing a duplicate return will not speed up this process.
Direct Deposit Issues
If your refund has been approved but you haven’t received it, there might be a problem with your direct deposit information. The IRS may send a notice, such as CP53C, indicating that they attempted to send the refund via direct deposit, but your financial institution could not process it.
