About the Western Balkans Meet Japan: A Bridge into the Future Program

The “Western Balkans meet Japan: A Bridge into the Future” program is a youth exchange initiative. It aims to deepen participants’ understanding of Japan, its policies, and its approach to peacebuilding. This program is organized under the MIRAI Program, a collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) and the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO). It provides a platform for young people from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia to engage in meaningful dialogue and cultural immersion. Participants will explore Japan’s strategies for peacebuilding, reconciliation, and global cooperation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) is a key government body responsible for Japan’s foreign policy and international relations. The Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO) is an intergovernmental organization established by the Western Balkans governments to promote cooperation, reconciliation, and youth engagement in the region. Programme Duration and Location

Minimum Requirements

To be eligible for the Western Balkans Meet Japan: A Bridge into the Future program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or PhD program in the Western Balkans.
  • Be 20 years old or older at the time of application.
  • Reside in one of the Western Balkans societies and hold a passport issued by one of the WB6 countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia).
  • Japanese nationals are not eligible.
  • Have a good command of the English language.
  • Be motivated to share information about Japan’s attractions through various communication tools.
  • Demonstrate good academic achievements and social activism.
  • Have not previously participated in exchange programs organized by the Government of Japan or lived in Japan.
  • Respect the spirit of reconciliation and cooperation in the Western Balkans.
  • Possess a valid passport.

Applicants with demonstrated ties to Japan, previous studies, cultural activities, or related experience will be given preference. A proven track record in dealing with the past, reconciliation, regional cooperation, and/or intercultural learning is desirable.
